Human-AI Teaming

For organizations using AI and human teams - this may be of interest.

If AI-human teaming is not aligned big problems appear. This is because the "skills" or "knowledge" AI and a human can bring differ and so do the speeds at which they work. I cannot stress enough how important that values are aligned. Values is a much used word, but fuzzy unless you know how to implement it and leaders regularly display values in actions.

Here is the challenge for human-AI teams

🛑 AI is amoral so HOW you build AI matters. It has no values - values are things we as humans have so the ability to override the AI and to use human judgement and capacity matters. Do you have a policy to escalate issues where the fuzzy boundary of values is affected?

🛑 Most firms do not have the money or talent to build AI so they are merely purchasing it. They need a strong purchase criteria and a strong idea of WHY you are using AI and for WHAT - as it matters for human-AI teams. Who is responsible for reading the Terms of Reference or developing the purchase criteria (legal, IT or the stakeholder company - how have you reflected values in this?)

There is a tendency to build the AI while using it. Some is the speed at which people want to deploy AI but you can research it well to understand and reflect your context.

🤔 Think about this - you want teams to interact and share diverse knowledge - are you using AI to help in the process or hinder that process?

🤔 You want an AI-enabled workforce that build skills not loses critical thinking - how is AI helping?

🤔 You want a workforce that is not struggling by a deluge of AI created content? How are you mindful of the volume of material and its usefulness?

🤔 You want a workforce that is inclusive. It is OK some people are not enamored with AI, maybe they bring different perspectives and skills to the table - have you considered this? How are you reflecting the diversity of thinking?

🤔 Last but not least - people who take purchase decision or executive decisions on AI should have deep knowledge of the domain. If you do not the risk is real of creating a burdensome tool humans need to conform to instead of a tool that augments human skills. This is where oversight and governance comes into play.
